Exzellenzcluster Simulation Technology (SimTech)

Die Universität Stuttgart konnte bei der Exzellenzinitiative des Bundes und der Länder erfolgreichen den Exzellenzcluster „Simulation Technology“ (SimTech) einbringen. Dieser wurde seit 2008 für 5 Jahre gefördert, eine Verlängerung konnte in der zweiten Runde der Exzellenzinitiative erreicht werden.

Numerische Simulationen sind ein wichtiges Werkzeug in der Forschung und werden auch heute schon in vielen Bereichen der Industrie eingesetzt. Sie können aufwendige, kostspielige oder auch undurchführbare Experimente ersetzen. In zahlreichen Teilprojekten ist eine große Anzahl von Instituten der Universität Stuttgart an SimTech beteiligt. Die Chancen des Clusters liegen insbesondere in der engen interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit der Teilprojekte, dem aktiven Wissensaustausch zwischen den Disziplinen und den sich daraus ergebenden Synergieeffekten.

Gemeinsam wird an der Entwicklung neuer Ansätze geforscht, um die numerische Simulation effizienter und robuster zu machen und ihren Einsatz auch in neuen Bereichen sowie komplexeren Szenarien zu ermöglichen. Eines der Hauptziele des Exzellenzclusters ist die Verschmelzung der Einzel-Strategien und Konzepten aus den verschiedenen Disziplinen zur neuen Klasse einer integrativen Simulationsumgebung. Ein Kernpunkt ist hierbei die Entwicklung einer integrierten Simulationsumgebung für die im Cluster entstehenden Simulationen und wissenschaftliche Anwendungen. Interaktive Visualisierung spielt in dieser Umgebung eine wichtige Rolle. Durch Sie wird die Analyse und Auswertung der von Simulationen generierten großen Datenmengen erleichtert oder erst möglich.

VIS und VISUS sind in SimTech mit Projekten vertreten, deren Forschungsthemen im Bereich der Visualisierung angesiedelt sind. Durch die Mitgliedschaft in der dem Exzellenzcluster angegliederten Graduiertenschule sind die bearbeitenden Doktoranden dabei eng in SimTech eingebunden. So wird über die Kooperationen innerhalb der Projekte hinaus der interdisziplinäre Wissensaustausch gefördert. Auch weitere Mitarbeiter, die kein Projekt in SimTech bearbeiten, sind Mitglieder in der Graduiertenschule und können so sowohl von dem dort vertretenen Wissen profitieren als auch dazu beitragen.
