Research

Visual Movement Analytics

With modern sensors it is possible to record movements of persons, animals, traffic and machines. The tracked data can include frequent movement patterns and anomalies, as well as correlations and even causal dependencies. With insights into these patterns one can optimize processes and products. Besides technical data, such as engine performance, track length, and shape, the semantic background is of interest. For an improved understanding of such information the enrichment with context information is helpful. We develop interactive visualizations that enable the analysis of large movement data. Thereby, different aggregation techniques are used, such as clustering, but also search and filter tools are applied. The key focus is especially the high integration of interaction, visualization, and automatic analysis techniques from the area of machine learning.

Social Media and Predictive Analytics

Social Media is an important source of information. When every user is regarded as social sensor, a very fine spatio-temporal information density can be established. The key focus of our research are public open data sources, such as Twitter, YouTube, and Flicker. We use these information for example for the assessment of complex crisis and disaster situations, but also in other areas the data can be useful. For example to predict product success. With our system "Prolix" we predict movie box office success. Therefore, we integrate sentiments and trends from social media sources. Also, social media content can give insights in movement reasons and enable a better prediction, for example to prevent bottlenecks of major events.

System "TravelDiff" for extraction and comparison analysis of movement data derived from social media. We currently try to use this data as a basis for epidemic simulations.
