Seminar "Empirical research for interactive systems"
Semester: WS 2012/2013
Umfang: 2 SWS
Dozent: Jun.-Prof. Dr. Niels Henze
Dipl.-Phys. Michael Raschke
Prof. Dr. Albrecht Schmidt
Prof. Dr. Thomas Ertl

Simulation systems are traditionally designed for domain experts and have typically complex user interfaces. While many systems still work in a batch-processing mode, where pre- and post-processing tools are employed to build models and analyze results, general advances and ubiquitous availability of computing will lead to more integrated and highly interactive simulation environments in the future. We expect that there are many opportunities to improve the interaction with such systems and the cognitive efficiency of dealing with complex data and scenarios. In order to scientifically compare interfaces and visualizations elaborate user experiments are a useful and established approach.

In this seminar we will look different ways to conduct empirical research in human computer interaction. Many of these approaches generalize to computer and systems science in general and link to empirical methods from social sciences. Specific topics include:

- Selecting an appropriate empirical methods for a given task

- The design of experiments to evaluate user interfaces

- Approaches to analyzing results and tools for statistical analysis

- Reporting results of experiments

- Validity of different types of studies (lab, internet, in-situ, ...)

- Ethical consideration in empirical research
