Hasti Seifi, VISUS guest from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany, is going to give a talk in the framework of Michael Sedlmair's VR/AR course entitled: "Haptics: Hardware, Algorithms, and Interactions"

Date: July 10, 2019
Time: 8 am
Place: Campus Vaihingen, Universitätsstraße 38,

Abstract
Haptics, the science and technology of programmable touch experiences, is gaining great traction in virtual reality, robotics, and wearable applications.  Major tech companies, such as Apple and Facebook, are increasingly investing in the field. In this talk, I will present an overview of the field, describing ways that haptic technology can improve our real-world and virtual interactions. Furthermore, I will cover three aspects of haptics research that deal with developing new hardware, rendering haptic sensations, and understanding human touch capabilities.

About Hasti Seifi
Hasti Seifi is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany. She received her Ph.D. in computer science from the University of British Columbia in 2017, her M.Sc. from Simon Fraser University in 2011, and her B.Sc. from the University of Tehran in 2008. Her research lies at the intersection of human computer interaction (HCI), programmable touch technology (haptics), and information visualization (infoviz). Hasti has won several prestigious awards for her research including the Eurohaptics best Ph.D. thesis award in the field of haptics in 2017 and an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship in 2018. Her work has drawn the attention of major tech companies such as Facebook Reality Labs, Immersion Corporation (the world's largest haptics company), and Technicolor USA. Through her research, Hasti aims to empower a wide range of users, designers, and experts to create, evaluate, and adapt haptic technology for their goals.
