Research

My field of research includes visual analytics, information visualization, and human computer interaction. The focus here lies primarily on the visual, interactive analysis of text documents, especially patent documents. As a consequence, questions and problems from the fields of natural language processing, information retrieval, data mining and information extraction, in particular, also arise. Of course, I am generally interested in all other areas of visualization as well, including, for example, geo-visualization, interaction on complex graphs and 2d-representations of high-dimensional data.

My research deals with a variety of application domains, such as developing visual approaches for the analysis of patent documents, scientific works, and texts from social media (e.g., Twitter). Lately, my research focus has shifted a little to include the visual analysis of text resources from the social sciences and the humanities, as well as data visualization in the context of eHumanities/digital humanities projects in general.

Regardless of the application domain, primary goal is always the intelligent and seamless integration of visualization and interaction techniques with automatic methods to improve the analysis and retrieval of information from large and complex data sets for both professional users and non-specialists. "Improvement" here refers to the speeding-up of analytic tasks and to an increase in robustness and controllability of existing approaches through visual feedback loops. This also includes providing analysts with supportive methods, which are currently seldom considered for analytic tasks because of their unsuitability in combination with traditional analytical environments. Interactive visual methods can help to leverage the benefits of these approaches. In combination with established methods it is, for instance, possible to validate analysis results more easily.
