Visualization deals with all aspects that are connected with the visual representation of data sets from scientific experiments, simulations, medical scanners, databases and the like in order to achieve a deeper understanding or a simpler representation of complex phenomena. To obtain this goal, both well-known techniques from the field of interactive computer graphics and completely new methods are applied. The objective of the course is to provide knowledge about visualization algorithms and data structures as well as acquaintance with practical applications of visualization. Based on the visualization pipeline and the classification of mapping methods, this course will present visualization algorithms and data structures for various kinds of applications and scenarios. 

Topics of this course are (tentative):

  • Introduction, historical remarks, visualization pipeline
  • Data acquisition and representation (sampling and reconstruction; grids and data structures)
  • Human visual perception
  • Basic mapping concepts
  • Visualization of scalar fields (isosurface extraction, volume rendering)
  • Visualization of vector fields (particle tracing, texture-based methods, vector field topology)
  • Tensor fields, multi-attribute data, multi-field visualization

Course Material

  • New assignments every Friday; deadline is the following Friday, 10:00
  • To increase the chance for a fast response in the case of questions, you should write a mail to ALL tutors
  • You can submit your solution in English or German
  • Submitting in groups of two people is allowed (groups with more than two people are not allowed!)
  • Hints for new assignments in the tutorials (after discussion of the old assignment)

  • No lecture on Wednesday, 17.07! Tutorial will take place.
  • No lectures in the week from 17.6. to 21.6.! (tutorials will take place)
  • No lectures and tutorials in the week from 20.05.2013 to 25.05.2013 (Pfingsten - vorlesungsfreie Zeit)
  • Due to the holiday on next Wednesday (01.05.), there will be also no tutorial on Tuesday (30.04.). No tutorials next week (30.04, 01.05.)!
    Therefore, the next assignment will be given out in the middle of next week and the submission deadline will be one week later (10.05.).
  • Lecture starts 8. April
  • In the lecture on Monday, 15.4., we will show you how to use eClaus and apply for the tutorial.
  • Only students for Diplom do not need the Schein (Prüfungsvorleistung) for the exam. All other students (Bsc., Msc., etc.) have to acquire the Schein (Prüfungsvorleistung) for the exam.
  • The interval of registration at the examination office for exams starts on 21.05.2013 and ends on 10.06.2013. Be sure to visit also the VIS office (room 1.453, Universitätsstraße 38) to get an appointment for your exam.
  • The exercises start on Tuesday, 16.04.2013 and 17.04.2013 with an introduction into Gnuplot.
  • The deadline for the submission of the fisrt assignment is Friday, 19.04.2013 at 10.00 am.
