Professor Hans Gellersen of Lancaster University, UK, has been awarded a 2022 Humboldt Research Award. The prestigious prize is awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to internationally renowned scientists and scholars in recognition of their research achievements. Professor Gellersen was nominated for the award by the Perceptual User Interfaces Group, headed by VIS professor Andreas Bulling, at the University of Stuttgart.
Known internationally for his research in the fields of Ubiquitous Computing and Human-Computer Interaction, Professor Gellersen’s particular interest lies in gaze and gestural interaction in HCI. With the award money of 60,000 €, he plans to collaborate with Andreas Bulling on advances in gaze-based human-computer interaction.
“The award by the Humboldt Foundation is wonderful recognition for my team’s research. My goal is to advance human-computer interfaces that better reflect the central role of gaze and eye movement for interaction and navigation in 3D. Professor Bulling and I have long shared an interest in gaze-based interaction and I am looking forward to expand our collaboration,” Professor Gellersen said on the occasion of receiving the award.
