Funding for the project "ANTICIPATE: Anticipatory Human-Computer Interaction”

Andreas Bulling, newly appointed Professor of Human-Computer Interaction and Cognitive Systems at VIS, receives an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) as one of only 403 talented young researchers. For his project "ANTICIPATE: Anticipatory Human-Computer-Interaction", he will receive a research funding of 1.5 million euros over the next five years.

The aim of the project is to establish the scientific foundations for a new generation of user interfaces that pro-actively adapt to users’ future input actions by monitoring their attention and predicting their interaction intentions – thereby significantly improving the naturalness, efficiency, and user experience of the interactions.

The European Research Council is an institution of the European Commission for funding scientific basic research. The ERC encourages high quality research in Europe and supports frontier research across all fields, on the basis of scientific excellence. The ERC Starting Grants are aimed at outstanding young researchers with groundbreaking projects whose doctoral degree dates back no more than seven years. The funding rate for this call for proposals, to which a total of 3,170 project applications were submitted, was 12.7 percent.
